Record Flawless Blue Topaz to Go on Show

RAPAPORT... A 9,381-carat topaz will go on display at a London museum
next month.
The world’s largest flawless blue topaz is scheduled to
appear at the Natural History Museum’s minerals gallery from October 19.
Measuring 15 centimeters long and 10.5 centimeters wide and weighing around 2
kilograms, the polished stone was treated to give it a vivid blue color, the
museum said.
“This stone is an excellent example of how humans have
crafted beautiful and desirable objects from the natural mineral specimens we
find around us, like those that we preserve in the collections at the museum,”
said Mike Rumsey, senior curator of the minerals collection.
The Ostro stone will be exhibited on permanent loan from
Maurice Ostro OBE, a British entrepreneur and philanthropist. The original
rough was discovered 30 years ago by his father Max Ostro, an explorer, in
Minas Gerais, Brazil. |
