Argyle Mine’s Largest Violet Diamond to Lead Rio Tinto’s Tender

RAPAPORT... The largest violet diamond recovered from Rio Tinto’s Argyle
mine in Western Australia is to go on sale at a tender this year.
Violet diamonds are especially rare, as the mine has
produced only 12 carats of polished violet diamonds for the tender in 32 years,
Rio Tinto said. More than 90 percent of the world’s rare pink diamonds come
from Argyle, the miner said.
The diamond will “capture the imagination of the world’s
leading collectors and connoisseurs,” said Josephine Johnson, the manager of
Argyle Pink Diamonds.
The oval-shaped, 2.83-carat polished diamond, known as the ‘Argyle
Violet,’ will lead Rio Tinto’s 2016 Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender. The sale will
start with private trade viewings in June and travel to Copenhagen, Hong Kong
and New York.
The ‘Argyle Violet’ was polished in Western Australia by
Richard How Kim Kam, a longstanding Argle diamond cutter, from a 9.17-carat
rough diamond discovered in 2015. The Gemological Institute of America assigned
it a color grade of fancy deep greyish bluish violet.
