Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall for Fourth Month With Fewer Tourists Visiting

RAPAPORT... Retail sales in Hong Kong declined for the fourth consecutive month as fewer mainland tourists visited. The number of tourists visiting the city in June dropped to 4.36 million, 2.9 per cent down on the figure for the same month last year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

The number of tourists from the mainland - the largest source of visitors - fell 1.8 per cent, from 3.4 million last June to 3.3 million in the same month this year. The value of retail sales in June fell 0.4 per cent year on year to HK$37 billion, which followed a drop of 0.1 per cent in May. In the first half of this year, retail sales value decreased 1.6 per cent compared to the same period last year, the Census and Statistics Department said.
