Rio Tinto unveiled the world’s “first” coin to feature a rare red diamond from its Argyle mine in Western Australia.

Known as the Kimberley Treasure, the coin has been put up for sale with a price tag of $762,280 (AUD 1 million) and is touted by the miner as an “investment piece.” It is made from one kilogram 99.99 percent fine gold and features a radiant-cut, 0.54-carat red diamond from the Argyle mine, famous for its colored diamonds. The mine produces on average one carat of red diamonds per year, Rio Tinto said.

The Kimberley Treasure is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, according to Rio Tinto, which is collaborating with the Perth Mint to release the coin.

The piece is a “beautiful symbol of the unique treasures of Western Australia and sets a new benchmark in limited edition craftsmanship,” said Simon Trott, managing director of Rio Tinto’s diamond business.
