Stornoway Diamond Corporation has produced 1 million carats at its Renard mine since the deposit opened in Canada in October, the company said Tuesday.

“Today’s news represents another important milestone in our production ramp-up at Renard,” said Matt Manson, Stornoway’s CEO. “The 1 million-carat threshold comes, coincidentally, at the same time that the first polished diamonds from the mine have become available for sale in Montreal.”

The asset, Quebec’s first diamond mine, will yield 1.8 million carats of rough per year over the first decade of mining, according to Stornoway’s forecasts. The first polished goods originating from the project went on display last week at the Montreal flagship store of retailer Birks Group, which plans to sell them as Canadian-branded diamonds.
