RAPAPORT... An Indian citizen was arrested at the border crossing from Jordan into Israel after being caught smuggling gold and diamonds worth several hundred thousands dollars, according to local newspaper Israel Hayom.

Gold was found hidden in the man’s toothbrush case and luggage and 150 carats of diamonds were wrapped in a small bundle,  found in his underwear.

The diamonds lacked Kimberley Process certificates, although it was unclear from the report whether they originated from a conflict zone. The man told customs officers that he intended to sell the diamonds in Israel, but the investigation is still underway.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and International Diamond Week in Israel is taking place at the Israel Diamond Exchange in Ramat Gan with $1 billion worth of legally transported goods available for trade. It is unclear if the timing of the smuggler's attempt was chosen to coincide with the event on the exchange.
