RAPAPORT... The eighth edition of the Signature show, hosted by India's Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), was well received by the industry. Held in Mumbai from February 20 to 23, 2015 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, the show included 1,100 booths that catered to close to 7,000 buyers, more than 580 exhibitors and eight international exhibitors.

Signature was inaugurated by Andrey Polyakov, the vice president of ALROSA. While GJEPC’s India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), held each year in July or August, is considered India’s biggest gems and jewelry event, Signature is becoming the preferred show for retailers on the lookout for new designs and trends.

Vipul Shah, the chairman of the GJEPC, noted that “Every year, we observe improvements in the design and quality of the products. And retailers from all parts of the country make a point to attend Signature in greater numbers.”

During the inauguration, Polyakov said that ALROSA is seeking new opportunities in India after signing long-term direct-sourcing agreements with 12 Indian polishing companies at the World Diamond Conference in December 2014.

Sharing his experience at the show, Colin Shah from Kama Schachter said, “Participation in Signature is a part of our annual trade show calendar and we look forward to meeting all our customers under one roof. The show was managed well and the requirements of the trade were well taken care of. Most of our customers were at the show, so it was an eventful four days for us.”

Shah added, “Talking about the business generated, to be honest, we were skeptical but hopeful that the show should reflect positive market sentiment and that is exactly what happened. Leaving the uncertainty behind, the mood of the retailers is clearly back and their intent to buy was evident during the show. And as a manufacturer-exporter, it was heartening to see the market sentiment moving in a positive direction, to say the least.”

In addition, this year’s show featured a Signature mobile app that helped participants and visitors locate the stalls of various traders, a boon given the large size of the venue and the number of booths. An online buyer matching program enabled exhibitors to screen other exhibitors and find those who matched their requirements.

The Artisan Design Jewellery Awards 2014 also took place during the show, with the jury, having narrowing the field of 800 entrants to 40 finalists, honoring 12 winners at the nearby Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. This year’s ceremony paid tribute to 100 years of Bollywood and recognized industry veterans. Noted Indian jeweler Viren Bhagat received the award for “Most Accomplished Artisan of Our Time,” while Suhani Pittie was named the “Emerging Jewellery Designer of the Year” and leading Indian jeweler Ganjam was awarded “Most Accomplished Retailer in Design Excellence.”

The 12 winners will now have the opportunity to intern with international jewelry houses Roberto Coin and Swarovski, as well as enjoying a fully paid trip to the Basel Jewellery and Watch Fair 2015, where their designs will be displayed in the India Palace Pavilion.
