RAPAPORT... Cyber Monday’s online shopper count was expected to fall 4.6 percent from a year ago as internet sales have become more spread out throughout the holiday season, the National Retail Federation said.

About 121 million people, or 49.5 percent of shoppers, planned to buy on the web November 30, compared with 126.9 million a year earlier, according to the NRF’s Cyber Monday Expectations Survey, carried out by data company Prosper Insights & Analytics.

“Unlike ten years ago, we live in a world in which you can shop anywhere at any time,” NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said in a statement November 29. “It’s no longer about one day, but a season of digital deals, and savvy online shoppers are ready to see what exclusive promotions retailers have in store for Cyber Monday before they checkout.”

Online purchasing is still mostly done from home computers, with 80 percent of consumers surveyed shopping on from a home PC. Some 24 percent said they would use mobile devices to shop online, according to the survey done over the weekend.

The poll found 42 percent planned to shop in early morning and 33 percent in late morning. About 17 percent would use their lunch hour to shop, while 29.5 percent would wait until early afternoon, the NRF said in its statement.
