Mountain Province will sell a 50.25-carat gem-quality diamond from the new Gahcho Kué mine in January, the largest stone yet from the Canadian project.

Three fancy yellow diamonds weighing between 3 carats and 5 carats will also be on offer, after Mountain Province won a bid to sell the September production of fancies and specials.

The 50.25-carat diamond “provides further confirmation that Gahcho Kué has a population of large, high-quality gem diamonds,” said Patrick Evans, Mountain Province’s president and chief executive officer. “It is also exciting to see a population of good-size fancy yellow diamonds, which offers encouragement that we’ll see further fancy diamonds as the production ramps up.”

Ramp-up production at Gahcho Kué started on August 1, six weeks ahead of schedule, and the mine officially opened in September. Total output in August and September stood at 198,000 carats, of which about 97,000 carats belongs to Mountain Province, which owns 49 percent of the mine. De Beers holds the remainder.

“Mining and processing continues to progress well and Gahcho Kué remains on track to achieve commercial production in early 2017,” Evans added.

The first open tender of run-of-mine production – excluding fancies and specials – will take place in Antwerp in January and about every five weeks after that.
