Lockheed Martin Files Patent to 3D-Print Diamonds

RAPAPORT... Aerospace company Lockheed Martin filed a patent for making synthetic
diamonds from 3D printing.
3D printing can create a diamond drill bit with “almost any
geometry,” as well as other industrial objects such as brake pad inserts
and lightweight armor, the U.S. patent filing said.
Inventor David Findley’s method involves depositing
alternating layers of a ceramic powder and a pre-ceramic polymer dissolved in a
solvent. Each layer of the pre-ceramic polymer is deposited in the shape that
corresponds with the object being created. The deposited materials are then heated to at least 100 degrees celsius.
