RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has appointed
Robert Weldon as head of its library and information center following the
retirement of Dona Dirlam after 38 years of service.
Dirlam (pictured) stepped down last week, having been at the GIA since
1979, when she took a graduate-gemologist diploma at its Santa Monica campus.
After holding various staff positions, she became director of the GIA library
in 1995, playing the chief role in setting up and expanding the institute’s
Richard T. Liddicoat Gemological Library and Information Center.
Weldon qualified as a graduate gemologist in 1987 and worked
for Dirlam in the library for three years. Starting in 1990, he was a gemstone
journalist at JCK and later at Professional Jeweler, before
returning to the GIA in 2006. He intends to continue expanding the GIA’s
collection and making it available to students, the trade and the public, the
lab said.
“Dona’s groundbreaking efforts on behalf of the institute’s
research, education and outreach capabilities have kept the GIA at the
forefront of gemological scholarship,” said Susan Jacques, the institute’s CEO.
