Alrosa Fires Two Executives over Flood

RAPAPORT... Alrosa has dismissed two senior executives after a
commission identified safety failings that resulted in the Mir mine flood in
August.
The Russian company fired Mikhail Lopatinsky, director of
the Mirny mining and processing division, and Alexander Kisilichin, the
department’s chief engineer, it said last week. The miner has reprimanded and
imposed sanctions on other individuals whom it considers responsible, it added.
Alrosa took the decisions in accordance with orders that the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia, or
Rostechnadzor, gave earlier this month. A commission set up by that organization found that certain design decisions, as well as a
failure to take into account complex geological characteristics of the mine,
were among the causes of the accident.
The commission also noted a failure to implement legislation
and internal rules at the company, resulting in an inability to predict
dangers, Alrosa said.
Eight workers died in the flood at the Mir underground mine
on August 4.
