Anglo American, which owns 85 percent of De Beers, has announced that chairman Sir John Parker will step down this year.

Parker (pictured), who has been chairman for eight years, will continue in the role until the company concludes its search for a replacement, the miner said this week. Leading the process will be senior independent director Sir Philip Hampton.

“Having seen Anglo American emerge in a strong position from the mining industry downturn, with its sharp falls in commodity prices between 2014 and 2016, I believe that the time is now right for the board to seek my successor during the course of 2017,” Parker said.
