Dominion Diamond Corporation’s new owner has appointed Patrick Evans as CEO of the Canada-based miner.

Evans (pictured) will take charge of Dominion once the Washington Companies’ $1.2 billion acquisition of the rough producer closes later this year, the firms said. He was CEO of Mountain Province Diamonds — De Beers’ joint-venture partner in the Gahcho Kué mine — until his resignation in June.

“Having operated a mining company in the Northwest Territories, Patrick already has a familiarity with the region and strong relationships with local officials and indigenous leaders,” Washington Companies president Lawrence Simkins said.

Washington, a mining group founded by entrepreneur Dennis Washington, agreed to buy Dominion last month. At the time, it said it planned to keep the miner as a standalone business while appointing a new, Canada-based CEO. Evans’s predecessor at Dominion, Brendan Bell, had already stated his intention to leave ahead of the company’s main-office move from Yellowknife to Calgary.
