RAPAPORT... Leo Schachter Diamonds was ranked as the top exporter of diamonds from Israel in 2014, according to a list of the country’s top 20 diamond exporters that was released by the diamond controller of Israel’s Economy Ministry.

The value of Leo Schachter Diamonds' exports fell 12 percent year on year to $288 million, in what became a difficult year for many in the global diamond industry. Among the top five diamond exporters in 2014, Niru Diamonds Israel experienced the greatest growth. The company’s net exports from Israel grew 39 percent to $156 million.

Israel’s Economy Ministry publishes a list of the country's top 20 diamond firms annually, based upon their stated value of exports.

Ministry data shows that net polished diamond exports for these 20 major firms reached $1.93 billion, representing about 31 percent of the country's total  polished diamond exports in 2014, said Shmuel Mordechai, the Economy Ministry’s controller of diamond, jewelry and gemstones.

Mordechai added that the list did not include 20 companies that requested anonymity and were, therefore, not included. Those 20 companies collectively recorded net diamond exports of $1.4 billion in 2014, comprising 22 percent of Israel’s net polished exports.
