Higher Grade Drives Alrosa Production Jump

RAPAPORT... Alrosa’s rough-diamond production grew 14% year on year in
the first half as mining grades increased, the company reported Monday.
Output rose to 19.3 million carats, with the average grade —
the volume of diamonds contained within the ore — 19% higher at 1.19 carats per
tonne.
Most of Alrosa’s major mining and processing divisions
recorded higher carat production and a higher grade during the six months,
Alrosa first vice president Igor Sobolev said Monday. The Aikhal division,
accounting for more than a third of production, saw rough output jump 26% to
6.9 million carats, while the Udachny segment contributed 2.1 million carats, a
29% increase. Production from the Nyurba division rose 2% to 3.4 million carats
and output from Lomonosov leapt 28% to 1.2 million carats. The Mirny division
increased production by 13% to 4.4. million carats.
The production growth “helps provide consistent supply of
rough diamonds to the sales divisions and meet demand for the company’s
products,” Sobolev said.
Meanwhile, Alrosa’s rough-diamond sales declined about 6% to
$1.13 billion in the second quarter, while polished sales stood at $22.7
million, according to Rapaport records. Sales volume rose 6% to 10.2 million
carats. The average price of gem-quality rough diamonds stood at $138 per
carat, an 18% drop from a year ago.
