Saul Gottlieb, the beloved husband of Bernice Gottlieb, loving father of three devoted sons, Jeffrey (Jodi) Gottlieb, Jerry (Susan) Gottlieb and Alan (Lorin) Gottlieb, devoted grandfather of eight grandchildren, Jamie (Eric) Synenberg, Seth (Katie, fiancée) Gottlieb, Arielle (Dave, fiancée), Gottlieb, Joshua Gottlieb, Jonathan Gottlieb, Jessica Gottlieb, Robyn (Dan) Brenner and Jordan Gottlieb and cherished great-grandfather of two great grandchildren, Ari and Noah Synenberg, has passed away.

Born May 26, 1925 in Ladomirova, Czechoslovakia to parents Jacob and Leah, Saul was the younger of two boys. His beloved brother Herman and both parents perished in the Holocaust. Beginning at the age of 16, Saul survived numerous ghettos and multiple concentration camps until he was liberated in March of 1945 by U.S. GI’s during a death march towards the city of Magdenburg.  gottlieb

Saul later resettled in Antwerp, Belgium in November of 1945, where he stayed with a cousin who was hidden during the war. While in Belgium, Saul worked as a jeweler where he mastered the art. Saul stayed in Belgium until August of 1948 at which time family members in Cleveland sponsored his immigration to the U.S.

Saul arrived in Cleveland and with only $90 in his pocket and limited knowledge of the English language, he built one of the largest and most well respected international diamond and jewelry manufacturing companies in the U.S., Gottlieb & Sons. Saul continued to grow this company for over 60 years and today it is proudly run by his three sons.

Saul met Bernice Shedroff in 1951 and was soon thereafter married on June 1, 1952. Saul and Bernice both took immense pride in their Jewish heritage and in supporting the Jewish community in Cleveland and the State of Israel. Saul was a proud member of B’nai Jeshurun Congregation where he served as an officer of the board and a lifelong trustee.  He loved attending morning Minyan and Saturday morning Shabbat services, leading the services from time to time. Saul also took great joy in celebrating each of the Jewish holidays with his children and grandchildren.

Saul’s community involvement did not end with his synagogue, B’nai Jeshurun.  He was also actively involved in the Jewish National Fund where he served on the board of directors and Israel Bonds where he was honored with  Bernice.  Saul also volunteered as a member of the Board of The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and a life member of Kol Israel foundation as well as an active supporter of Technian, and Bar Ilan Universities in Israel.

Saul received several awards and recognitions for his work in the Jewish community and as a distinguished businessman.  In addition to receiving numerous honors and awards from his congregation, Saul was also awarded the Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remembrance Medal.   Saul received awards from the Ohio Jewelers Guild and the Legends Award from the Mid America Jewelry Show.

Despite these impressive accolades, Saul valued nothing more than spending time and traveling with his loving wife of 62 years, Bernice, his three  sons and daughter-in-laws, his grandchildren and great grandchildren and friends.
