ALROSA's Udachanaya Mine: At-A-Glance

RAPAPORT... ALROSA has shifted operations at the iconic Udachnaya mine from open-pit to underground mining that will eventually yield 5 million carats a year.

• The Udachnaya pipe opened in June 1955 and has been in development since 1967.
• Udachny became ALROSA’s largest open pit with its surface area measuring 1,600 x 2,000 meters and its depth spanning 640 meters.
• Approximately 350 million tonnes of ore containing rough diamonds worth around $80 billion were mined throughout the open pit’s lifetime.
• Udachny was considered the flagship diamond mine in Western Yakutia, with its output peaking at 12.8 million tonnes of ore per year.
