India’s polished-diamond exports grew 14% in April, according to data the nation’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) released recently.

Shipments increased year-on-year to $1.99 billion for the month, with the volume of exports rising 17% to 2.8 million carats, the GJEPC figures showed. The average price of exports decreased 2% to $719 per carat.

Polished imports slumped 38% to $114.4 million, resulting in net polished exports — calculated as polished exports minus polished imports — rising 20% to $1.88 billion.

Rough imports fell 13% to $1.52 billion, while rough exports dropped 35% to $77.5 million. Net rough imports, representing rough imports minus rough exports, slid 11% to $1.44 billion.

India’s net diamond account — total rough and polished exports minus total imports — rose $441.4 million in April from negative $58.7 million a year ago.
