Press Release: Rio Tinto’s iconic annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender, comprised of the best annual production of extremely rare red and pink diamonds, is being hosted in Hong Kong during the final leg of a global showcase tour.

Almost the entire world supply of rare pink diamonds comes from Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine in the remote east Kimberley region of Western Australia. Their unique color range is the result of a rare combination of intense heat and pressure occurring below the earth’s surface 1.6 billion years ago.

Rio Tinto Diamonds managing director, Jean-Marc Lieberherr, said, “There is strong global interest in our tender diamonds from both the established and emerging markets.

“It is great to be in Hong Kong and see the excitement around this year’s tender collection. Rarity, beauty, craftsmanship and a very special birthplace are a potent combination for collectors, connoisseurs and fine jewelry specialists.”

Hong Kong is the final destination for the 30th annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender that includes four extremely rare fancy red diamonds, headlined by the Argyle Cardinal™ - a spectacular 1.21-carat radiant-cut fancy red diamond. Only 13 fancy red diamonds have been included in the tender since the inaugural event in 1984.

Other diamonds showcased in the collection include the Argyle Rosette™, a 2.17-carat fancy intense purple-pink emerald-cut diamond and the Argyle Toki™, a 1.59-carat fancy intense purplish-pink emerald-cut diamond.

Following the invitation-only Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender viewings in Hong Kong, the diamonds return to Australia and bids close on  October 8, 2014.
