RAPAPORT... The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) is introducing a notification system that informs users by text message in the case of a security incident in the city’s diamond hub, the organization said in an email update.

AWDC said the SMS alerts mechanism was designed to update the Antwerp diamond community fast in the case of a “serious and ongoing emergency” within the Antwerp Diamond Area and, if necessary, to give evacuation guidance.

The service is free of charge but registration is subject to review by the ADWC. The alerts system will not be used for any other purposes, the email added.

An AWDC spokesperson declined in an email to say whether there were specific incidents that led to the new initiative and said no external advice had been sought. The AWDC has in the past held evacuation drills involving over 2,000 people based in the diamond district.
