RAPAPORT... The All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) called for a flat tax across the country to ensure uniformity across the industry, The Economic Times reported last week.

“We will be happy if the government announces the implementation of a 1 percent goods-and-services tax to place the sector under a unified umbrella and get it more organized,” the report cited GJF chairman G. V. Sreedhar as saying.

This would help promote initiatives such as the ‘Make-in-India’ campaign to encourage local manufacturing and support the government’s proposed gold monetization scheme aimed at cutting the country’s import of the metal, Sreedhar said.
