RAPAPORT...
Sotheby’s and Christie’s are gearing up for a week of big-money Magnificent Jewels auctions in New York, with individual diamonds expected to fetch up to $35 million.

The highlight of the two sales is a cushion modified brilliant cut, 9.54-carat, fancy deep blue, VVS2 diamond ring which “may be potentially internally flawless,” once owned by late entertainer and diplomat Shirley Temple. The gem will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s April 19, with an estimated price tag of $25 million to $35 million.

Christie’s will offer the ‘Jubilee Ruby,’ which is set to lead the auctioneer’s sale at the Rockefeller Plaza April 20. The oval-shaped gem, weighing approximately 15.99 carats, is of Burmese origin and shows no signs of heating treatment. Its price range is estimated at $12 million to $15 million. Christie’s will also auction a 10.07-carat cushion, fancy intense purple-pink diamond for up to $12 million, which is six times the price it sold for in 2007.

The sales come ahead of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva on May 18, where the 14.62-carat ‘Oppenheimer Blue’ is scheduled to go for bids of up to $45 million. Sotheby’s sold the ‘De Beers Millennium Jewel 4’ for $31.8 million (HKD 248.3 million) in Hong Kong earlier this month.
