RAPAPORT... U.S. consumer confidence declined slightly in April as the outlook for the labor market worsened, according to the Conference Board’s monthly report.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index stood at 94.2 in April, down 2 percent from its March reading of 96.1. The Present Situation Index rose 1 percent, while the Expectations Index slid 5 percent.

Lynn Franco, The Conference Board’s director of economic indicators said consumer assessment about current conditions improved but short-term expectations have moderated, “suggesting they do not foresee any pickup in momentum.”

The report suggested those anticipating more jobs to become available in the coming months fell as did the proportion of consumers expecting incomes to rise. Consumers were also more pessimistic about business conditions over the next six months.
