Silver has captured the imagination since it was first discovered in Anatolia in 4000 B.C. The ancient Greeks and Romans associated the white metal with the Goddess of the Hunt. The Incans believed that silver was formed by the tears of the Moon Goddess and considered the precious metal sacred. They used silver to create decorations for temple ceremonies and jewelry for kings and nobility. The modern-day 25th wedding anniversary — also known as the silver anniversary — got its start in a medieval German celebration where a husband, along with neighbors, adorned his wife with a silver crown as part of the festivities to commemorate the occasion. Early twentieth-century Art Nouveau designers and Modernist and Studio jewelers from the 1930s through the 1960s used silver to showcase the art of jewelry design, creating pieces that look as contemporary today as they did when first made. In the 1960s and 1970s, silver jewelry took center stage in avant-garde and bohemian styles. Designers in the new millennium draw upon the rich heritage of silver to create jewelry that is both timely and timeless.
