RAPAPORT... Angola’s National Criminal Investigation Directorate (DNIC) seized more than 30,000 stones and arrested several national and foreign citizens for diamond trafficking in 2007, Angola Press reported.
DNIC official, Sebastiao Ngunza, said in the report, the arrests had been made mainly in Luanda, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Bie and Malanje, and that 123 dockets had been opened.
Similarly, Portuguese news agency, Lusa, reported that DNIC chief, commissioner Eduardo Cerqueira, said illegal diamond trafficking has been funding illegal activities, including to destabilize countries.
Cerqueira was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of anti-diamond trafficking units belonging to the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region, which was aimed at outlining strategies to stop the trafficking of diamonds and precious metals, Lusa said.
