The International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) and the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) will not be holding a joint World Diamond Congress this year.

The 40th edition of the event — in which the organizations meet to discuss industry-related issues — was set to take place live at the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) following a five-year period in which it ran in a virtual format. This year, the IDMA will hold its congress alone at the Tel Aviv Carlton, in Israel, from March 28 to 30, the association said Tuesday. The WFDB will also convene on the same days, but at a separate Tel Aviv location.

“During the past 68 years, the IDMA and its sister organization, the WFDB, have jointly organized and held their biennial World Diamond Congresses,” said IDMA president Ronnie Vanderlinden. “This year, disappointingly, during the preparations for the 40th edition of the Congress, IDMA was unable to overcome one final obstacle put in our path, despite much effort and compromise.”

IDMA did not disclose what obstacle was preventing the two organizations from holding a joint Congress this year. The summit will cap a weeklong series of professional events in Israel between March 27 and 30 as part of International Diamond Week.

“There is no shortage of critical issues facing our industry,” said Jeffrey Fischer, honorary president of the IDMA. “[We] will be tackling the challenges before us during our sessions. No doubt, WFDB will be doing the same.”
