Berkshire's Retail Segment Sales +5% in 2011

RAPAPORT... Berkshire Hathaway reported that sales from its retail operations rose 4.7 percent year on year to $3.1 billion in 2011. Retailing  consist of four home furnishings businesses, which are Nebraska Furniture Mart, R.C. Willey, Star Furniture and Jordan’s, and See's Candies as well as  jewelers Borsheims, Helzberg Diamonds and Ben Bridge.

Pre-tax earnings for the retail segment  jumped 21 percent to $239 million.  Each of Berkshire's  retailing businesses generated comparatively higher revenues and pre-tax earnings, according to the company.

The company's revenues across all sectors grew 5.5 percent year on year to $143.69 billion in 2011. Net earnings, attributable to Berkshire Hathaway, fell 21 percent to almost $10.3 billion.
