BHP Billiton's Diamond Production -39% in 2Q

RAPAPORT... BHP Billiton's  diamond production from the Ekati diamond mine in Canada fell 39 percent year on year to 295,000 carats during the second quarter that ended on December 31. Rough diamond production for the first half of the company's fiscal year fell 35 percent to 608,000 carats.

BHP reiterated its agreement to sell all interests in the Ekati mine to Harry Winston for $500 million, with the expectation that the deal will close during the first half of calendar year 2013. Progress on Ekati's Misery open-pit pushback project is 34 percent complete and  remains on budget, according to BHP.
