RAPAPORT... Rough diamonds from Rio Tinto's Diavik mine in Canada will be available for viewing in Israel for the first time in August. The viewing will occur during Israel's Diamond Week, scheduled to take place during the week of August 26, 2013 at the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE).

The diamonds will be sold through Rio Tinto's new auction platform in Antwerp during the second week of September.

“This is an opportunity to engage with the Israeli diamond industry and in doing so increase the awareness and understanding of the Diavik production and Rio Tinto Diamonds’ sales processes in the Ramat-Gan market," said Patrick Coppens, the general manager of sales for Rio Tinto Diamonds.

Although the majority of Rio Tinto's diamonds continues to be sold through supply agreements with the company's Select Diamantaires, the company recently decided to offer specific product segments from its Diavik mine for sale to a wider community of invited companies.

“The gem diamonds produced by Diavik are well suited to Israeli manufacturers and we are delighted to partner with Rio Tinto in this unique viewing opportunity,” said Yair Sahar, the president of IDE.
