Press Release: The International Gemological Institute (IGI) – the world’s largest independent laboratory for testing and grading gemstones and fine jewelry – recently launched its “Young Gemologist” summer workshop, an introductory half-day session designed for students between the ages of 10 and 15, in Mumbai. After receiving overwhelming initial interest, and enrolling 30 participants in its first course on May 21, the IGI School of Gemology has expanded the program into a regular, ongoing weekend offering.

With this new initiative, the Institute intends to provide an educative, fun and engaging platform for aspiring gemologists -- young students who are interested in gems and minerals and are open to the idea of a future career in the industry. An enriching, hands-on experience, the workshop allows students to visit IGI’s laboratory, providing a chance to observe gems and minerals in various colors and sizes and exposing them to the Institute’s world-renowned certification and grading processes.

Serving as an introduction to the basics of gemology, the program’s coursework guides participants through important questions related to the origin, value and construction of gemstones. Specific curriculum include gemstone color ranges and varieties, and the 12 zodiac stars/signs and related gemstone.

“The ‘Young Gemologist’ workshop is very close to my heart, as it is an experience I would have loved as a kid,” said IGI's India managing director, Tehmasp Printer. “Gemstones are a fascinating subject, and we should introduce youngsters to the thrills of this industry at an early age. IGI instructors are tailoring the subject matter with young people in mind and are very confident the kids will find it enriching.”

Printer continued, “IGI’s hope is that this initiative will help aspiring gemologists explore and learn about gemstones in detail – something that is not covered in standard educational curriculum. The initial response has been outstanding and we look forward to continued success as we broaden the program into a regularly occurring workshop.”
