RAPAPORT...  The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) scheduled a live webinar series beginning this spring that is designed to help members avoid legal risk and implement compliant business practices.

The first in the series is titled "Grading Reports: What Retail Sellers Need to Know" and will be held on May 6 from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. EDT. The JVC stated that when selling gems,  jewelers frequently rely on grading reports that become part of the sales process. But what is the retailer's  responsibility for representations on reports, such as color and clarity grades? The JVC stated that it is critically important to know what you’re selling and to understand the liability for representations -- even if it originated at a third party.

The second webinar, "Intellectual Property and How to Protect Yourself," will take place on June 16 from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. EDT and focus on copyright, trademark, patent and other vital areas of intellectual property law. Attendees will hear  how to use intellectual property and what differentiates copyrights, trademarks and patents.

On August 26 from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. EDT, the JVC will host the webinar "Mediation and JVC Member Benefits" to explain the various resources offered to JVC members.

JVC will host the webinar "Responsible Sourcing & Transparent Business Practices" on November 4, from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. EDT,  which addresses jewelry  component sourcing and the manner by which materials  are brought to market. JVC stated that the business practices in the industry are often raised -- in the most public settings --  in a negative way, so this webinar will teach attendees how to incorporate concepts of responsible sourcing and compliance and ethical business practices into daily practice to protect their reputation.

Each webinar is free to members, but JVC will charge $25 per webinar for non-members.  Find out more at www.jvclegal.org.
