Press Release:  At the suggestion of the Independent Jewelers Organization's (IJO) board of directors during the annual meeting, held at the Palm Springs conference in February, the group created a millennial advisory board that will meet with IJO board member Dina Unwin of Sterling Jewelers. According to an announcement by IJO's president and CEO, Jeff Roberts, the purpose of this new board will be to involve and capture ideas and concerns from younger jewelers in IJO who are looking at making a career in the jewelry industry.  It will enable the millennial generation of IJO to share their thoughts, perspectives, ideas and concerns and these meetings will occur at each of IJO’s semi-annual conferences. Unwin will then take the millennial board’s comments back to the IJO board of directors for further discussion.

“We are fortunate to have a really active, involved and supportive board of directors,” said Roberts. “Comprised of nine retail and two vendor members, it acts as a liaison between the membership and IJO headquarters and has contributed a great deal to the betterment of this organization.”

Alec Garcia of Garcia Jewelers in Farmington, New Mexico, who was named to the millennial board, said,  “I’m delighted to have been asked and I'd love to participate in this newly created board. What a great honor this is for me.”

Roberts said,  “This board represents the next generation of IJO. They are the future of our industry and I want to ensure, as best I can, that it’s everything that they want it to be.”

The first meeting for the millennial board will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown  Nashville on Saturday, July 25 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Joining Garcia, other millennial board members include Chris Caves of Caves Jewelers in DeSoto, Texas, Alex Hevia of Kiefer Village Jewels, Lutz/Land O’Lakes in Dade City and Brandon, Florida,  Mallory Murphy of Murphy Jewelers in Pottsville and Hamburg, Pennsylvania, Landon Wiland of J. David Jewelers in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Scott Kaufman of Allison-Kaufman Company in Van Nuys, California.
