RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has published the list of client accounts that submitted the 1,042 diamonds whose color or
clarity reports were altered by
hackers, the organization said in a statement October 27.
The list includes the number and
issue date of the invalidated reports, the shape and weight of each diamond,
and the submitting client account, the GIA said. The list does not include
color or clarity grades because these may have been altered, it added.
In another development, two former employees of Tata Consultancy Services, a contractor that supports GIA
databases, are in custody, according to the statement.
Client accounts listed by the GIA have
been suspended from further submissions to the institute pending further
investigations.
The GIA is co-operating with the country’s police
authorities in relation to the investigation, it added. It was given the
go-ahead by the police to publish the accounts after the probe had reached a point
at which this was acceptable, the statement further said.
The GIA also requested that anyone
in possession of any of the diamonds and grading reports in question return
them immediately to it for a free examination.
The GIA invalidated grading reports for 1,042 diamonds
submitted mostly to its India grading laboratory after an outside party gained
unauthorized access to the GIA’s grading information database and changed the
reports, the group confirmed in a statement October 23.
Clients
that submitted the diamonds in question have been contacted and suspended from
further submissions to GIA pending continued investigation.
Meanwhile, in response to the
incident, the London Diamond Bourse has introduced a report checker aimed at
flagging stones that need further examination by the GIA, the exchange said in
a statement October 26.
