RAPAPORT... The Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) has appointed Eli Avidar as managing director, replacing Moti Besser, who had completed two terms in the role.

Avidar, managing director of the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI) since January 2007, takes on the new position with immediate effect, according to an IDE statement January 13.

Avidar was Israeli consul-general in Hong Kong and Macau from 2001 to 2005. Between 1999 and 2001 he headed the Trade Representation Office of Israel at Dohar in Qatar, and was foreign policy adviser to the then-Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon in 1999.

Avidar’s appointment comes after Yoram Dvash was elected president of the IDE in December. Soon after taking office he appointed a new board and committee heads and set up an advisory panel of former presidents.

"During my time on the board of IDI, I have come to know Eli Avidar as a man of many talents,” Dvash said in the statement. “His management style, experience in the international diamond business arena, diplomatic skills and ensuing capabilities, and his dedication to the well-being of the Israel diamond industry and trade, make him a perfect candidate for this position.”

Besser, a former managing director of Israel’s State Comptroller's Office, was appointed managing director of the IDE in November 2011 by the then-president Yair Sahar.

Avidar will remain as managing director of the IDI, a spokesperson for the organization confirmed in an email to Rapaport News January 14.
