Belgium’s January Polished Diamond Exports Decline

RAPAPORT... Belgium’s polished diamond exports declined 4.5 percent year on year to $772 million in January, according to the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC). By volume, exports fell 8 percent to $397.9 million carats, while the average price rose 3.8 percent from a year ago to $1,940 per carat.

Among Belgium’s biggest trading partners, polished exports to the U.S. fell 0.5 percent to $243.8 million. Exports to Hong Kong edged up 0.6 percent to $137.5 million despite a 31 percent surge in volume terms. Shipments to Israel dived 8.1 percent to $99.3 million.

Total polished imports to Belgium climbed 11 percent to $985 million during the month. Net polished exports, representing exports minus imports, improved from negative $304.6 million in January 2015 to negative $213 million this year.

Rough imports decreased 13 percent year on year to $730.4 million and rough exports dropped 6.7 percent to $791.9 million. Net rough imports, representing imports minus exports, declined from negative $9.7 million to negative $61.5 million during the month.

Belgium’s January net diamond account, representing total polished and rough exports minus total imports, improved from negative $294.8 million to negative $151.5 million.

The latest figures come after the AWDC reported a 9-percent drop in polished exports in 2015 amid unfavorable industry conditions.
