GIA Grades Largest HPHT Synthetic Diamond to Date

RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced it graded
the largest faceted blue synthetic diamond ever examined by the organization.
Researchers in
the GIA’s New York laboratory inspected the emerald-cut, 5.03-carat HPHT-grown
type-IIb stone produced by New Diamond Technology (NDT), a company based in St.
Petersburg, Russia, and one of the founding members of the recently
launched International Grown Diamond Association. The gem was graded as
fancy deep blue, according to a lab note February 19. The examination took
place in January.
“As the size
and quality of synthetic diamonds improve, careful identification is
essential,” the note said. “Examination of this large IIb synthetic diamond,
combined with those previous reported from NDT, illustrates the rapid progress
in HPHT growth technologies. This is a development that will eventually impact
the jewelry industry.”
Several
distinctive features of HPHT-grown diamonds were identified, including faint
but sharp color zoning and a cuboctahedral growth pattern. The examination also
found two broad bands which have been reported previously in NDT’s type-IIa and
IIb HPHT diamonds.
The largest faceted
colorless HPHT-grown diamond reported to date was a 10.02-carat, E, VS1 stone
reported by IGI Hong Kong in 2015, the lab note added.
