RAPAPORT... Five gang members have been handed jail sentences ranging
from six to seven years for their roles in the $19.9 million (GBP 14 million)
burglary of jewelry from the Hatton Garden security vault in London’s diamond
district, The Guardian reported.
The heist,
described by prosecutor Philip Evans as the biggest burglary in English
history, took place over the Easter holiday weekend in April 2015.
John “Kenny”
Collins, 75, Daniel Jones, 61, and Terry Perkins, 67, were jailed for seven
years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary, the U.K. daily
reported March 9.
Carl Wood, 59,
and William Lincoln, 60, were sentenced to six and seven years respectively
after they were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to
conceal, covert or transfer criminal property.
A video has
also been released showing a Sainsbury's supermarket bag containing stolen
jewelry from the heist being unearthed after Jones, one of the ringleaders,
offered to take detectives to Edmonton Cemetery in London, where he hid the bag
under a dead relative’s gravestone.
A sixth
man, plumber Hugh Doyle, 48, were given a 21-month suspended sentence after he
was found
guilty of concealing, converting or transferring criminal property, the
report said. Ringleader Brian Reader, who is suffering from ill health, was
absent from Woolwich crown court and will be sentenced at a later date after
suffering a stroke in prison. Another alleged thief, known as “Basil,” is still
at large.
