RAPAPORT...
Dominion Diamond Corporation has postponed a project by about two years that is expected to add a decade to the lifespan of its Ekati mine in Canada.

Mining and processing of kimberlite from the Jay project in the Northwest Territories will not take place until late 2022 compared with an original plan of 2020.

Jay is the most significant undeveloped deposit at Ekati and has the potential to extend the mine’s life from a projected closure in 2020 to at least 2030, according to Dominion.

Dominion revised the schedule because it determined that it could keep a continuous ore supply from the existing Ekati mine for longer than expected, giving it more time to work on developing Jay.

The initial timetable, released with the results of a pre-feasibility study in January 2015, would have seen construction start in the second half of 2016. “Dewatering” of the area isolated by the dike and “pre-stripping” would have begun in 2019 and mining of the Jay pipe and processing of kimberlite would have commenced in 2020.

Under the new plan, construction of an all-season access road will take place in 2017 followed by construction of the water retention dike and associated infrastructure in 2018 to 2020. “Dike instrumentation, dewatering and the start of pre-stripping” will occur in 2021 and mining and processing of Jay kimberlite will be in late 2022, according to a Dominion statement.

In September 2015 the company announced a one-year deferral of Jay ore processing in the Sable project, another undeveloped deposit at Ekati that has potential synergies with the Jay project.
