IGI Becomes Curator of Museum of Named Diamonds

RAPAPORT... The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has been designated
curator-at-large for the Museum of Named Diamonds, a non-profit organization
set up as a registry for the world’s named diamonds.
Curators assist the museum with the registration and naming
of purchased diamonds, which includes “story collection” and helping consumers
choose names for their gems, the IGI said. The curator-at-large designation is
for national or international organizations doing a “significant” volume in the
collection of diamond stories for the museum, the institute said.
The museum enables consumers to preserve their own named
diamonds and stories, meaning
a diamond can have a name even if it is not famous. The owner can register the diamond with the museum and gives it a name that
fits with the story behind the gem.
“The Museum of Named Diamonds is focusing on the romance and
symbolism of each diamond, and the unique story behind it – an important part
of the diamond-ownership experience,” said Jerry Ehrenwald, the IGI’s president
and chief executive officer. “We’re enthusiastic about helping consumers enjoy
this added dimension.”
The curator program started in April. Participating retail
jewelers are being named associate curators.
