RAPAPORT... Blue Nile will open a ‘webroom’ near its headquarters in Seattle, Washington, as the online diamond retailer expands its bricks-and-mortar footprint with its fifth physical store.

The ‘webroom’ concept allows customers to try out engagement rings on-site and get advice from non-commissioned consultants. Visitors can also access an online catalog on in-store tablet devices. Blue Nile saves on overheads and prices are 40 percent lower than those at traditional jewelers, it said.

The latest such store, at Bellevue Square, will open by the Thanksgiving holiday, which is on November 24. It follows openings in Portland, Oregon; Fairfax County, Virginia; as well as two in New York – one in Long Island and one in White Plains.

“The coolest part is that the engagement rings they choose will be handcrafted less than 15 miles away in our fulfillment center,” said Harvey Kanter, Blue Nile’s president, chairman and chief executive officer.

Meanwhile, in an earnings call with analysts February 11, Kanter said Blue Nile could open between 25 and 50 webrooms.
