RAPAPORT... Nordstrom appointed Geevy Thomas to a new role of chief innovation officer to help the retailer keep up with trends in consumer habits and strengthen online sales.

Former salesman Thomas has served for 34 years at the company and was most recently the president of its fashion brand Nordstrom Rack, which will now be headed by Karen McKibbin.

Nordstrom has not released its holiday sales figures or issued preliminary guidance just yet. However, U.S. department stores such as Macy’s and J.C. Penney reported disappointing results, losing business to online retailers.

“The way customers are choosing to shop in a more digitally connected world continues to change, and we know we need to find ways for our stores to evolve with them,” said Erik Nordstrom, co-president of Nordstrom. “This is a challenge, but we also see a tremendous opportunity to leverage our stores in ways that will allow us to serve customers into the future better than anyone else.”

An ‘innovation team’ will be responsible for envisaging how the company should give customers better service through improved use of digital and mobile capabilities, Nordstrom said.
