RAPAPORT... The Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF) has named Anna Martin as
its new president, succeeding Phyllis Bergman, who is departing after a five-year
term.
Martin (pictured), who is senior vice president for global development
and beneficiation at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), was elected to
the position at the DEF’s annual board meeting in January, the organization
said in a recent statement.
The DEF added that its co-vice president Ed Hrabak, the
retiring chief operating officer of Signet Jewelers, would remain on the board
in a personal capacity. The leadership team also includes fellow vice president
Varda Shine, who was formerly the head of global sightholder sales for De Beers;
Reed Jewelry Group senior vice president Yancy Weinrich, who serves as
secretary; and treasurer Richard Slomovitz, who is also chief financial officer
of Rush Communications.
Founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Russell Simmons and De
Beers, the DEF supports initiatives to help people in countries with
significant economic dependence on the diamond trade.
