Alrosa raised $12.9 million from a rough-diamond auction at its new Eurasian Diamond Centre in Vladivostok.

The miner sold 21,000 carats of gem-quality rough for $8 million, at an average price of $380 per carat, the company said Tuesday. The remaining $4.9 million of sales were from 440,000 carats of industrial-grade diamonds.

The sale attracted 22 companies, including bidders from China, South Korea, India, Europe and Russia. However, the main buyers were Indian and Chinese, the company said.

Alrosa opened its office in Vladivostok — about 65 kilometers from Russia’s border with China — a year ago to boost sales to the Asia-Pacific region. The company plans to sell 2 million carats of diamonds worth a combined $73 million at the branch this year.
