RAPAPORT... Gem Diamonds has appointed Rio Tinto and McKinsey & Co veteran Harry Kenyon-Slaney as chairman, effective from June.

Kenyon-Slaney (pictured), currently a senior adviser to McKinsey, has more than 33 years’ experience in the mining industry, Gem Diamonds said Tuesday. A geologist by training, he is also a partner at Audley Capital Advisors and a member of the board of directors at Bridon Bekaert Ropes Group.

Until 2015, Kenyon-Slaney was a member of the group executive committee at Rio Tinto, where he served as CEO of energy and before that as CEO of diamonds and minerals.

He will succeed current Gem Diamonds chairman Roger Davis after the company’s annual general meeting on June 6.

Kenyon-Slaney’s “experience, knowledge and contacts in the diamond mining world are perfectly suited to lead Gem Diamonds forward to what I am sure will be an exciting future,” Davis said.

Davis has been chairman of Gem Diamonds since 2007. The company owns the Letšeng mine in Lesotho, known for its large and high-value rough diamonds.
