Sales at specialty US jewelry stores reached $2.31 billion in March, a 3.3% increase from the previous year, according to provisional figures from the US Census Bureau.

The increase reflected an 8% improvement in the Consumer Confidence Index for March, bringing it to its highest level since December 2000, data from the Conference Board trade body showed. That figure then declined 3.7% in April.

In the first quarter, jewelry-store sales increased 1% year on year to $6.92 billion, added the Census Bureau report, which came out earlier this month. The report lags about two months behind the month under review.
