De Beers Unveils Tool to Screen Multiple Set Stones

RAPAPORT... De Beers’ grading unit has developed the first synthetic-screening
device capable of testing multiple jewelry-mounted stones at once without the
need for a probe, the diamond producer claimed Tuesday.
The machine, called SYNTHdetect, only refers about 0.05% of
diamonds for further checking, the lowest rate in the industry, according to
the International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR). While other detectors come with an attached device that the user has to press onto each stone one at a time, SYNTHdetect lets the person place the jewelry on a tray so it can check all the stones at the same time.
IIDGR, a subsidiary of De Beers, unveiled SYNTHdetect at the
JCK Las Vegas show this week. Using the laboratory’s patented luminescence
technology, it can screen diamonds quickly and simultaneously in a range of
jewelry pieces, including rings, earrings, bangles, brooches and necklaces.
The low referral rate significantly reduces the need for
additional tests, which can be costly, IIDGR explained, pointing out that many
other screening products send up to 10% of stones for further investigation.
IIDGR is taking orders for the machines — which are designed
for back-office use among jewelry manufacturers and retailers — and said
deliveries would begin in September. The launch follows IIDGR’s introduction
last year of PhosView, which sifts out High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT)
synthetics. Earlier this year, it rolled out AMS2, an automatic melee-screening
machine, which it will start delivering next month.
SYNTHdetect “will provide jewelry manufacturers and
retailers with greater levels of assurance that every diamond they purchase and
sell as a natural diamond is exactly that,” said IIDGR president Jonathan
Kendall.
