Sarine Sues over Alleged Patent Infringement

RAPAPORT... Indian officials have raided four locations in search of evidence that local entrepreneurs have been supplying diamond manufacturers with equipment illegally copied from Sarine Technologies.
Sarine has sued a “group of unscrupulous businessmen” who,
it claimed, violated the company’s patented technology for internal-inclusion
mapping, as well as its copyrighted “Advisor” software for rough-diamond
planning. These machines help people cut and polish diamonds by identifying
flaws and other features of rough stones.
The defendants — several companies which Sarine believes are
affiliated to one main party — illegally provided equipment and services to
diamond manufacturers, Israel-based Sarine claimed in a statement Saturday.
Court representatives on Wednesday conducted raids on four sites
in which the alleged infringing parties operate, Sarine said. The company has also
asked the High Court of Gujarat, based in Ahmedabad, to impose a restraining
order on the companies, meaning they would be forced to cease the activities in question.
“We are encouraged by the courts’ swift action, their
understanding of the gravity of the situation, and their implementation of
immediate steps to protect Sarine’s legal rights,” said Sarine CEO David Block.
“We trust that the measures necessary to completely halt these blatantly
illicit activities will be implemented not only to protect Sarine, but also to
safeguard the integrity of India’s diamond industry that relies so heavily on
the public’s trust.”
