(Rapaport…June 6, 2005) Thailand's exports to India will double to $4 billion by the end of 2007 because of tariff cuts agreed upon by the two governments, according to Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in his weekly radio address to his nation.

Thai exports to India between January and April doubled to $505 million, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. Its shipments to India rose 43 percent in 2004 to $913 million. In the four months ended December 31, 2004, the value of Thai exports to India rose 109 percent year-to-year to $87.3 million. Imports declined 36.2 percent to $22.2 million.

Thailand’s gem and jewelry exports to India have increased by 18 percent since the two countries reduced import tariffs on 82 items in the first stage of their free trade agreement signed on September 1, 2004, according to the Thailand Trade Negotiations Department.

The India-Thailand Free Trade Agreement signed last September is encountering roadblocks as India has put more than 1,000 items on its sensitive list compared with Thailand's 100, according to Thai government officials.
