(Rapaport…September 20, 2005) De Beers launched its Zeppelin Airship in Botswana on September 16, marking the beginning of a new kind of diamond exploration in southern Africa using most modern technology, according to Bostwana’s Dailynews on September 19.

The airship displays the Diamonds for Development logo and will use modern geoscience equipment designed to find diamond-bearing kimberlite rock as it conducts large sweeps over Southern Africa. The airship will remain in Botswana for eight months where it will be used in the exploration of areas around Jwaneng and Orapa.

Speaking at the launch, managing director of Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Gareth Penny said that the three companies involved in the mission are Germany’s Zeppelin Airship Company with its innovative transport system, The United States’ Bell GeoSpace which brings geographysical technology, and Africa’s De Beers Group which combines the expertise of the two companies in order to search for new diamond deposits.
